Teachers of Students with Visual Impairment (TVI)

Functional Vision Training is provided to visually impaired children from birth to five years of age. Training is in the child's home or his/her preschool program. This training helps a visually impaired child function more independently and lays the basis for a more independent adult in the future.

 

Functional Vision Training is also provided to students over age 5 throughout their school years including college.  Services are provided at the school.

 

"Care about Children's Eyes" is an educational program about eye health and safety for children. This interactive program includes:

• Videos about eye health and safety
• Discussion and demonstration on environmental hazards (including sports)
• Lesson on the various eye colors
• Group activity using the different types of eye movements
• Final discussion on why eyes are so special

 

A packet of educational information is distributed to each child’s teachers as well as to each child to bring home to their parents. Topics include:

• Preventing eye accidents in the home
• Signs of possible eye trouble in children
• Ten hazards to children's eyes
• Eye safety tips
• First aid for eye emergencies
• Children's eye problems
• "Eye Q" test
